Do you have to reset the computer when replacing the battery in a BMW?
BMW driver’s question
I have a problem. Most likely it involves the battery, but I am not sure about that.
The situation is as follows, after the winter the battery was already in poor condition (the car in the winter practically only stood in the garage, rarely started), so I decided to recharge it, I disconnected the terminal from the “-” and plugged it in to charge overnight.
In the morning after connecting the clamp, the car fired up without any problems.
Then, after about 2 weeks of not firing up, I tried to start the car, which to my surprise did not move at all.
In my opinion, everything points to the battery, because the car barely opened from the key, the lights inside briefly came on, but immediately went out and the car obviously did not start.
The question is whether it was the battery that died, or maybe after my charging the battery and reconnecting it, I forgot something, something had to be reset in the computer?
And if the battery already had to be replaced, is it then necessary to reprogram something in the computer?
The problem was with a 2007 BMW 520d E60, but it also occurs in other models.
Response from BM Cars service
Rather, the symptoms you described are indicative of the need to replace the battery. Once it has been recharged, no reset or any other action is necessary. Recharging the battery can be done without unplugging or removing it. The charger should be connected to the connectors ” ” (covered with a red cap) and “-” under the hood (minus at ground).
Each time a battery is replaced, it should be registered in the vehicle diagnostic system. It is necessary at registration to enter the capacity of the new battery, then we have a guarantee that it will be charged with the correct size of current. In addition to replacing the old battery, it seems necessary to check the resting current draw. The car after about 30 minutes should go into a ” sleep” state with minimal current consumption. If a controller “awakens” it from this state the current draws may be large enough to discharge even a new battery.
