Do you need to change the oil in an automatic transmission in a BMW?
BMW driver question
I own a BMW 5 E39 with automatic transmission and for some time now when reducing gears, more or less at 60 km/h I feel jerks in the transmission. In addition, when accelerating quickly, while the engine speed is at 5,000 – fourth gear jumps in. Fifth gear only engages at 6,000 rpm. What needs to be done to make this stop? In my manual it says that you do not change the oil in the box, is this true?
Maybe it should be replaced? If so, will you do it?
The problem affected a 1997 model BMW 5 E39 with a 535 V8 engine, but it happens in other models as well. The following comments apply to all BMW models with automatic transmissions.
Response from BM Cars service
To check the correct operation of the automatic transmission, it is necessary to perform a full computer diagnosis and check the level and quality of oil in the transmission. The problem you described of the transmission jerking when shifting gears and “dragging” gears at high speeds may indicate excessive wear of the components responsible for a particular gear (discs and baskets).
Stalling, an increase in engine speed and a longer-than-usual wait to engage the next gear may be caused by engine problems.
