What is the acceptable engine oil temperature on a BMW?
BMW driver’s question
What is the acceptable engine oil temperature? According to the gauge on the dashboard in my BMW, it reaches 120 degrees Celsius when driving quietly. Is this the correct value?
The problem affected the BMW X3 F25, but it also occurs in other models.
Response from BM Cars website
The BMW model X3 F25 car has an oil temperature gauge on the dashboard. This is the counter design used on all F-series models. Oil temperature indications are less important for normal engine operation than coolant temperature indications – which are missing from the meter.
The allowable engine oil temperature is the maximum indication on the meter. In the BMW X3 F25, it is 170 degrees Celsius. With normal engine operation and summer outdoor temperatures, the oil temperature usually does not exceed 120 degrees (middle meter readings).
Oil readings are important for keeping the engine and components in good condition. When the engine temperature is very low (e.g., right after starting), we should refrain from heavy acceleration and increasing engine speed.
After prolonged dynamic driving, when the oil temperature reaches 120 degrees or more, we should leave the engine idling for at least a minute before turning off the engine. Such procedures will help prolong the life of the engine and components – especially turbochargers fed with engine oil.
A full computerized service diagnosis at our service center will allow us to precisely check the temperatures and other components in the BMW in question.
