Squeaks when starting the engine in BMW – what is the reason and how to fix it?
BMW driver question
When the engine starts, there is a screeching sound, but it is not the belt or the tensioner, because it has already been replaced, and the sounds remain. What could be the reason for this situation and how to fix it?
The problem affected a BMW 520d model, but it also happens in other models.
Response from BM Cars service
The described problem of squeaks appearing when the engine starts is most often associated with seized rollers – tensioning and guiding the multi-ribbed belt or a faulty tensioner.
In BMW E60 models with two- and three-liter diesel engines, there is often the problem of the vibration damper pulley – which, after a mileage of about 150-200,000 km, becomes vulcanized and the metal rim of the pulley detaches from the rubber center. The result is the appearance of strong vibrations felt throughout the body when the engine is running and the effect of squeaks when igniting and extinguishing the engine.
In such a case, it is necessary to immediately replace the pulley, since further operation of the engine can cause it to tear off and damage many components of the attachment. In order to make a clear diagnosis of the damage, it is necessary to visually inspect it at our service center.
