Shift lever vibration in BMW – what is it caused by and how to fix it?
BMW driver question
My car is experiencing a vibration in the gearshift lever. I have already replaced the dual mass wheel, while the multi-spring wheel and the engine and transmission cushions are in working order and show no signs of wear. What could be the problem?
The problem occurred in a BMW 118d E81, but it may also happen in other models.
Response from BM Cars service
The described problem is usually caused by the wear of the elements supporting the shift lever. The lever is seated in a plastic ring, which under wear causes excessive play and, as a result, vibration of the lever at idle and while driving. If, in addition, this is combined with the failure of the lever to return to its rest position (neutral on the left), the lever tension springs, located in the gearbox, have also worn out.
The repair of the first fault described above is relatively simple and not very expensive.
The second defect – replacement of the lever tension spring – involves disassembly of the gearbox and is costly, due to the inability to buy replacement parts. BMW does not offer them in its catalog.
