Inability to put a reverse gear in a BMW – how to fix it?
BMW driver question
I have a manual transmission and all gears work perfectly. There is only one problem with the reverse gear. I can’t reverse because the gear can’t be put into gear. How can this fault be solved?
The problem occurred in a BMW 5 F10 with a 2.0 diesel engine, but it can also happen in other models.
BM Cars service response
The problem is usually related to a mechanical failure of the gearbox. The phenomenon is especially common in new BMW models of the F series and E90, E87. It appears at first in the form of difficulty in engaging gears especially the first gear and reverse gear on a cold transmission.
The next stage is difficulty in shifting the aforementioned gears regardless of the temperature of the transmission (oil temperature). Your stage already relates to permanent damage preventing the gear (in this case reverse) from engaging.
Repairing the transmission is severely hampered because in the parts catalog, BMW does not offer any replacement parts for manual transmissions other than the shaft exit seals. It is possible to repair outside the BMW network using the company’s spare parts.
Making an accurate diagnosis requires a visit to the service center and a full diagnostic, that is, checking the box and the transmission assembly.
