Lack of power and high fuel consumption on a warm engine in a BMW – how to fix it?

BMW driver’s question

The car on cold laughs OK. As soon as it warms up it loses power and displays combustion of 40 l/100 km. The computer shows errors for the camshaft position sensor and the flow meter. I tried unplugging the flow meter, but no change. Is it possible that this sensor is responsible for the combustion?

The fault is with a 1999 BMW 523i E39 touring, but it also happens in other models.

Response from BM Cars service

The described symptoms suggest a malfunctioning flow meter. The lack of response after unplugging it is additional evidence of its malfunction. Indications of very high fuel consumption are also related to the malfunction or distortion of the measurement of the amount of air sucked into the engine.

Errors related to the camshaft position sensor can affect lack of power and difficulty starting a warm engine. A full engine diagnostic is necessary for confirmation.
