I have a problem with the shift lever - it does not automatically return to the neutral position after engaging fifth gear. What could be the cause?

The problem of the shift lever not returning from the extreme positions - fifth gear or reverse - occurs most often in BMW 3 E46 models. For some time it was covered by a technical action conducted by BMW AG at authorized service centers.
The solution to the problem is to replace the repair kit, the so-called "PIN Locks" for fifth or reverse gear. The operation requires removal of the entire transmission.
