BMW error “Drive failure. Go to service.” – what does it mean and how to fix it?
The “Drive Failure” message on BMW cars indicates a serious malfunction in one or more components of the drive train. The car may go into emergency mode with limited driving speed. This should not be underestimated. Learn more about the causes and repairs.
On which BMW models can the “Drive Failure” message appear?
This message applies to all BMW models in the F and G series, as well as recent models in the E60 and E65 series.
What is the reason for the error “Drive Failure. Go to service” on the BMW?
The display of the “Drive Failure – Go to Service” error coincides with the illumination of the check engine light and indicates a problem related to the vehicle’s drive train. Usually, the appearance of this message indicates that the drive has gone into failure mode, that is, the vehicle’s power and speed are reduced. Both the failure message and the check engine light can indicate different types of malfunctions. In any case, a full diagnostics of the vehicle is necessary.
The most common fault triggering this message on diesel models is a malfunction in the EGR exhaust gas recirculation system. A damaged or dirty valve does not perform its function and too much, or too little, exhaust gas enters the engine’s intake system. This consequently causes high emissions through the exhaust system.
Another cause causing the above message may be a transmission problem. In models equipped with the xDrive system, this could be a signal of problems with the VTG box, which connects the front axle to the drivetrain.
Regardless of the cases described above, we may have engine problems:
- fuel system failure,
- ignition system problems,
- timing system failures.
- improper engine controls.
The above-described cases mean that a visit to the service center and a full diagnostics of the vehicle is required.
Is it safe to continue operating a vehicle with an apparent “Drive Failure” error?
No warning message should be ignored by the driver. We recommend taking action to diagnose and correct the problem. It is worth remembering that further driving is possible, but the failure mode will limit the maximum driving speed.
Is it enough to delete the error in the BMW’s on-board computer to remove the message?
In most cases, simply erasing the error is not enough. Without replacing faulty components like the EGR valve, it is not possible to clear the error. However, once a full diagnostic is performed, the extent and timing of the necessary repairs can be determined.
How to properly repair the drive train in BMW?
After the diagnostics of the vehicle have been performed and the damaged components have been identified, it is necessary to replace them. In many cases, after replacing the components, it is also required to delete the saved adaptations. Then new adaptations need to be saved in order for the entire system to work correctly.
