Body vibration and noises in BMW – what causes such faults?
BMW driver question
I have a problem with vibration and noise in a BMW 3 E46. The symptoms increased gradually and now they are unbearable, I point out that there were no previous repairs. In order to correct the malfunction I have replaced:
- the cushions under the engine,
- control injection (BOSCH brand),
- clutch,
- bearings on the drive shaft.
The mechanic suggested that maybe the manual transmission is the reason, but no noises are coming from there, the gears are not popping, the stick is not shaking. I also checked the exhaust system – it is also fine. On the Internet, several BMW users described this problem, but no one answered what could be the cause. I don’t know what I should replace. If you can help, my gratitude would have no limits. I forgot to add that the noise is greatest after sharply adding the gas in gears 3, 4, 5. On the other hand, after taking off the gas, at idle and while driving downhill, it is as quiet as a poppy seed. What could be the cause?
The problem affected a 2001 BMW 3 E46 320d, but it can also happen in other models.
Response from BM Cars service
From the symptoms presented, it can be assumed that the noises are caused by damage to the shaft support or rupture of the rear bogie mounting cushions. It is not possible to make an accurate diagnosis, solely on the basis of the description given. It is necessary to visually inspect the vehicle and check all components related to the driveline.
We advise against the repair method of replacing more components or by trial and error. These methods are costly and risk damaging other functional components. We recommend using a professional service.
