Spontaneously fired pyrotechnic clamps in a BMW – is this a common occurrence?
BMW driver question
A few days ago, while stopped at traffic lights, the pyrotechnic clamps in my BMW spontaneously fired. In addition, airbag errors appeared.
I would like to know if BM Cars deals with car electronics and its repair, because I am not sure if I should rather look for a car electrician with such a problem?
The problem was with a 2004 BMW 525i E60 with a gasoline engine, but it can also happen with other models.
BM Cars service response
The described fault is an extremely rare case. Spontaneous firing of pyrotechnic components is extremely rare and is under special protection from automotive concerns. These include:
- airbags – (airbags in English) that protect passengers during a collision,
- pyrotechnic clamps – these disconnect the electrical circuit to prevent ignition of fuel,
- seatbelt pretensioners – which hold passengers to the seat,
- active head restraints – (BMW uses the name Pro Active Head Restraint) minimize the risk of cervical injuries.
In the past, malfunctioning pyrotechnic components have been the cause of many dangerous accidents.
Of course, we are able to repair your car. In addition to replacing the pyrotechnic clamp itself, it is necessary to fully diagnose the vehicle and try to determine the cause of the firing of the clamp.
