Do you need to back up the power when replacing the battery in a BMW E63?

BMW driver question

I want to replace the battery in my BMW. Can I hook up another battery for the replacement? I want the car, to have power for the duration of the operation. Is this necessary? I don’t want the car to lose its settings when I unplug it.

The problem was with a 2009 BMW 635 E63 with a diesel engine, but it may also occur in other models.

BM Cars service response

Hooking up another power source (a second battery) is possible through the front connectors and preserves the vehicle’s existing individual settings and saved driver adaptations. For E-series models, this is not required, but it facilitates the operation and preserves the aforementioned data.

In addition, after replacing the battery, its registration should be performed with the entry of the capacity and type of the new battery using a diagnostic computer. This will allow itsproper charging and thus extend its life.
