BMW driver's question

I am writing regarding a problem that arose with the DPF after visiting two workshops. I received different suggestions from the mechanics about the air cleaner. One says not to replace it, while the other absolutely recommends it, as it affects the cleanliness of the air intake. Please advise.

The problem was with a 2008 BMW E60 520d with an N47 engine and 250,000 kilometers, but it can also happen in other models.

BM Cars service response

The filter for the air purge is subject to periodic replacement. In the older versions of the N47 engine, the odometer was a replaceable part subject to replacement after 100,000 kilometers or earlier if it failed to perform its function. Its function was to separate the oil from the exhaust gases pushed out of the crankcase and directed back into the engine's intake system.

In the newer versions of the N47 engine, the odometer is an integral part of the valve cover. Its service life has not been increased and should be replaced along with the valve cover if it fails to perform its function - passing oil into the intake system. The inefficiency of the air cleaner and the appearance of engine oil in the intake system can result in, among other things, faster clogging of the DPF filter.

We invite you to visit our service center to accurately diagnose the situation.
