Vibrations and “kicks” in the automatic transmission in a BMW – what is the cause?
BMW driver question
For some time now, when I switch the automatic transmission to D (drive mode) and hold on the brake for a while, the car shakes. I can feel a slight vibration from the drivetrain, which is normal, but in addition to that, I can feel a slight kick that feels on the seats. When I set the Sport or Manual mode – the car runs evenly. The vibrations are sometimes stronger and sometimes very faintly felt. I noticed that it also depends on the inclination of the vehicle or the temperature of the engine. What could be the cause?
The problem concerned BMW with automatic transmission and mileage of 87,000 km, but it may also occur in other models.
Response from BM Cars service
The described behavior of the vehicle may be indicative of incipient problems with the automatic transmission, especially with its torque converter clutch. Symptoms of jerking, vibration of the vehicle when Drive mode is engaged should not occur. In addition, the “kicking” effect when starting or when engaging Drive gear may indicate a problem of excessive play in the transmission system that is, play in the flexible link of the driveshaft, CV joint or rear axle.
Regardless of the supposition, a full diagnostic of the transmission vehicle is necessary, including checking the level and condition of the oil in the transmission. The mileage suggested by the manufacturer of the gearboxes to change the oil in the automatic transmission is about 60-70,000 km – with normal vehicle operation (without towing a trailer, sports driving or long highway runs at high speeds).
