What do the 4010 and 41AB errors in BMW diesel engines mean?
BMW driver question
When firing up in the morning it jerks the engine for about a minute, and then it runs perfectly. Have been remanufactured injectors, chemically cleaned DPF, made adaptations and still the same, throws error 4010, 41AB. How to fix it
The problem affected BMW 1 E87, but it can also happen in other models with diesel engines.
BM Cars service response
The described problem of morning engine jerking immediately after starting is very complex. In the case of diesel engines, a functioning glow plug system is necessary for proper starting and smooth operation in the initial temperature range, especially after a long period of standstill. They are necessary not only for starting the engine, but also in the initial phase of engine operation before it reaches the proper operating temperature.
Exhaust gas from a diesel engine at too low a temperature is highly sticky and can effectively coat the entire exhaust system and exhaust gas recirculation system. Particularly prone to malfunction here is the EGR valve, whose malfunction results in lack of power or uneven engine operation and choking when trying to accelerate.
The errors you read in the diagnosis relate to the signal from the exhaust gas pressure sensor before the DPF – error 4010 and the boost pressure sensor – error 41AB. To solve the described problems, we suggest the following plan:
- Check the glow system – plugs glow plug controller.
- Checking the injection system – injector corrections.
- Cold engine compression check.
- Checking the EGR valve and intake system – cleaning the intake.
- Checking the exhaust gas pressure sensor before the DPF.
- Inspection of the boost pressure sensor.
Each of the above-described inspection activities should be completed in the form of confirmation of the efficiency of the component or replacement of the defective component with a new one.
