BMW driver question
I would like to purchase a used BMW with 160,000 km mileage, but after a test drive I noticed the following two problems. The manual transmission reverse gear comes in very hard, you have to use considerable force. The second problem is vibration to the left and right of the transmission shifter at idle. At a standstill and while driving, it looks as if the transmission cushions are worn out. I would like to get your opinions as I cannot get a concrete answer anywhere. Have you had to deal with such defects? What specifically needs to be replaced and can such problems occur more frequently?

My car is experiencing a vibration in the gearshift lever. I have already replaced the dual mass wheel, while the multi-spring wheel and the engine and transmission cushions are in working order and show no signs of wear. What could be the problem?
The problem occurred in a BMW 118d E81, but it may also happen in other models.
BMW driver question
I have owned a BMW 3 for a year and the car uses about 1 liter of oil (Castrol edge 0w40) per 1,000 km. My question is: is this the norm for this engine or is there something wrong with it?
The problem was with a BMW 318i E90 with the N46B20B engine, but it can happen in other models as well.
What is a catalyst?
A car catalytic converter is the colloquial term for a catalytic converter, which is a component of the exhaust system and is designed to reduce the amount of harmful compounds in the exhaust gas. Catalytic converters have been used for many years and their presence in the exhaust system is enforced by regulations(EURO standards). In addition to cleaning the exhaust from harmful substances, the catalytic converter ensures that the engine achieves the set parameters of power and torque. Cars with diesel engines use DPF filters, which we described in a separate article.
What is a DPF?
The abbreviation Diesel Particulate Filter has been adopted into the Polish language from the English language and stands for Diesel Particulate Filter, which is installed in cars with diesel engines in order to maintain the quality of exhaust emissions that comply with the stringent EURO standards. In a properly functioning engine, this filter ensures that emissions of dangerous soot and carbon particles are stopped. However, its service life is predetermined and does not cover the entire life of the car. For most BMW models equipped with DPF filters, the manufacturer’s assumed service life is about 200,000 kilometers. Gasoline cars use a catalytic converter, which we wrote about in a separate article.
We have just bought our wonderful BMW, and we are full of excitement and admiration no matter how old it is or how many miles it has been driven. We feel honored because it is, after all, a premium car. After a period of admiration and fascination, there comes a moment when our vehicle starts “crying out” for help. Sometimes it’s a light displayed on the on-board monitor or dashboard, sometimes it’s sounds coming from around the engine, or in extreme cases it “refuses” to cooperate. The engine has died and won’t start.

When the temperature drops below zero, there is a jerking sensation in my car for the first few kilometers. In addition, there is white smoke coming from the exhaust pipe. The list of repairs I have done so far: remanufactured turbo, replaced thermostats, cleaned EGR, removed catalytic converter, removed intake flaps and removed DPF. I use BP ultimate fuel. There are no errors on the on-board computer. Please support.
BMW driver’s question
The problem occurs during freezing weather. In my car with automatic transmission after putting R (reverse gear), sometimes D (gear for normal driving) the engine goes out. Clearly something is choking it, then it fires up normally. Only after the engine warms up does the problem disappear. Changes that have been made: new EGR, cut flaps, cleaned DPF, exhaust cooler, injectors, turbo. Zero errors on the computer. Please help.
