Engine power drops and black smoke from BMW – how to fix it?
BMW driver question
I have a problem with my BMW. It consists of abnormal firing. I turn the key and the engine starts hard. Then it smokes black. It smokes less when accelerating and at slow speeds. The car has trouble going up a slight hill, as if it has no power. The engine power is 260 hp and it feels power drops.
The problem affected the BMW 5 E60 3.0d, but it can also happen in other models.
BM Cars service response
Firing problems in diesel engines can be caused by a faulty glow plug system, which is essential to the starting process.
The effects of smoke and lack of power can point to faulty injectors and an oil-flooded intake system with a mist filter. With significantly exceeded injector corrections, there is also the problem of starting the engine, and further operation threatens to damage it.
For an accurate diagnosis, it is necessary to perform a full engine diagnostics with compression measurement and check the injectors and intake system.
