Rattling when shifting gears in BMW – what is the reason and how to fix it?

BMW driver question

When changing gears (the worst is from 1 to 2 a little better from 2 to 3) there is a strange noise from the chassis as if the rear part (maybe the shaft support) and unfortunately jerks. As I try to change gears very gently, I almost succeed, there is no way to change quickly. Higher gears from 3rd to 4th and 5th shift just OK. Reducing from higher to lower does not happen smoothly either. Please give me a hint.

The problem affected a BMW E46 320Ci, but it happens in other models as well.

BM Cars service response

Noise when switching gears, while driving, can come from the gearbox (worn synchronizers) and usually manifests itself in the form of a rasp. If gear engagement, in addition to the noises, is also combined with a jerking sound, it may additionally be due to damage to the flexible shaft link or rear beam bushing. You should also check the level and quality of the oil in the gearbox(oil should be changed every 240,000 km or so) and the condition of the clutch.
