Ringing noises after replacing the timing gear in BMW with N47 engine – how to fix it?
BMW driver question
I own a BMW with an N47 engine. I heard the timing rattle for 3 seconds after starting. After replacing the complete timing gear (no tragedy) it suddenly started “ringing”. The sound can be heard non-stop, but only after driving a long distance, that is, warming up the engine. As far as I know, it is impossible for the timing chain to stretch and shrink. Please advise.
The problem may affect all BMWs with the N47 engine.
BM Cars service response
We suggest that the timing replacement performed should be verified and possibly repeated.
It is necessary to check all the components listed. If the complete timing gear was replaced: chains, sliders, sprockets and tensioners, and it was done correctly, then there should be no noises.
It is also necessary to verify whether the “ringing” noises are coming from the valve train or from another engine component.
A full computer diagnosis and visual inspection will give us a complete picture of the situation.
