Message “oil level sensor fault!” in BMW – what does it mean and how to fix it?

BMW driver question

I use the car in urban conditions, which results in driving short distances before the engine has fully warmed up. That’s why I’m curious what the message “oil level sensor fault!” means, and the car icon on the jack also appears, after the engine is turned off. Is it caused by my way of using the car? Intuition tells me a correlation with the diesel particulate filter (DPF), but I have my doubts. I will add that the oil level is normal. I would appreciate a reply.

The problem concerned the BMW 5 E61, but it happens in other models as well.

Response from BM Cars service

The message you sent indicates that the oil level sensor is damaged. The damage has nothing to do with the way the car is used. On the other hand, frequent driving on short distances will result in an increase in the oil level and a reduction in the distance of use of the diesel particulate filter – for its regeneration or replacement.
