The durability of the timing gear on a BMW – when should it be repaired or replaced?
BMW driver question
I would like to ask about the durability of the valve train on the BMW 5 F10. Is it necessary to replace in this engine as in the N47 engine of the BMW 5 Series E60? If so, after what mileage and what is the approximate cost of such a repair?
Thank you very much in advance for your answer.
The problem was with a BMW 5 F10 model with a 2.0 l 184 hp diesel engine manufactured after 2010, but it happens with other BMW models.
Response from BM Cars service
The N47 engine on models after 2010 did not include periodic replacement of timing components. The technical action on timing elements in the N47 engine covered 2007-2008 copies and was completed in 2015.
The same engine with minor improvements is still produced and installed in many models. The timing drive components have been changed from those of 2007-2008, and so far there are no mass cases of their failure after low mileage.
Opinions on the durability of the valve train and the entire N47 engine in new models (after 2010) are still difficult to gather due to the small number of vehicles with very high mileage on the Polish market.
The only way to accurately determine the current state of Mr. Timing and the possible costs associated with replacement is to perform a full computer diagnosis and a visual inspection of the vehicle.
