What is the normal operating temperature of the engine in the BMW 3?
BMW driver question
I would like to know if the engine operating temperature of 100 degrees is normal? I would like to add that the car warms up to this temperature, after driving only a dozen kilometers.
The problem concerned a 2014 BMW 3 F30 318 with a 143 hp diesel engine, but it may also occur in other models.

Response from BM Cars service
In the described model there is no indication of the engine operating temperature. Only the engine oil temperature indicator is installed on the F30 model. The actual engine operating temperature is not shown on any indicator available to the driver.
The optimum operating temperature of a 1.8 l N47 diesel engine is about 90-95℃. The thermostat only opens at 87℃. If the operating temperature of the engine is significantly exceeded, a high temperature message and check engine light will appear and a service call will be made to rectify the fault.
The engine oil temperature rises relatively slowly due to the significant amount of oil (5.2 liters) and slow heating. The distance of several kilometers to reach a temperature of about 100℃ is quite correct in non-winter conditions.
