The engine goes out at full turn – what is the reason and how to fix it?

BMW driver question

My BMW goes out when making a major turn. Sometimes it won’t even start if I don’t add gas. In addition, it has lost its power, that is, it no longer has the “kick” it always had. Please advise.

The problem is BMW 525 E34, but it may also occur in other models.

Response from BM Cars service

The symptoms described are most often associated with damage (wear) of the injection pump. In E34 and E36 models with older generation diesel engines, the injection pump wears out after high mileage of 200-300 thousand km. This manifests itself as a ripple (drop) of revolutions at high load, for example:

  • at full wheel turn,
  • when the power steering pump gives the highest load,
  • when the air conditioning is turned on.

Repair usually involves regeneration or replacement of the injection pump. A visit to a service center is necessary for a complete diagnosis.
