High oil consumption in BMW – what could be the causes?
BMW driver question
I have owned a BMW 3 for a year and the car uses about 1 liter of oil (Castrol edge 0w40) per 1,000 km. My question is: is this the norm for this engine or is there something wrong with it?
The problem was with a BMW 318i E90 with the N46B20B engine, but it can happen in other models as well.
Response from BM Cars service
Such high oil consumption cannot be the norm in any internal combustion engine, including the N46.
In our experience, this type of problem very often occurs in this engine model. The most common reason is accelerated wear of piston rings (cylinder liner) and valve seals.
For a specific diagnosis, a visit to the service center and a full engine diagnostics is necessary.
