Steering wheel goes hard and does not return to vertical in BMW – how to fix it?
BMW driver question
The steering wheel in my BMW goes hard and does not “bounce”. It stays in position as I turn. I would like to know what could be wrong?
The problem affects all BMW models.
BM Cars service response
The described problem may be related to a malfunction of the power steering system, e.g. the oil level in the system is too low, the power steering pump is not working or the steering gear is seized. It is also necessary to check the geometry and condition of the front suspension. Properly adjusted front wheel alignment, allows the steering wheel position to return correctly to straight ahead while driving.
Very often during operation, users refill the oil in the power steering system using the wrong type of oil. BMW cars’ power steering systems use ATF or CHF oil. On the power steering reservoir cap there is a description of the type of oil used. Using the wrong oil leads to “short-circuiting” and, in a short time, seizing of the power steering pump.
