Jerking and white smoke on cold engine in BMW – what is the reason and how to fix it?
BMW driver question
When the temperature drops below zero, there is a jerking sensation in my car for the first few kilometers. In addition, there is white smoke coming from the exhaust pipe. The list of repairs I have done so far: remanufactured turbo, replaced thermostats, cleaned EGR, removed catalytic converter, removed intake flaps and removed DPF. I use BP ultimate fuel. There are no errors on the on-board computer. Please support.
The problem was on a 2007 BMW 320d E91, but it can happen on other models as well.
Response from BM Cars service
From the description of the defects and the work performed, it seems that it is necessary to check the injectors. Especially on a cold engine. Even if the corrections are within the limit of -4 to 5 °C, but approaching -2 or 2 °C, it is necessary to additionally check the engine compression and check the injectors on the measuring table. Alternatively, the injectors will need to be replaced or reconditioned.
Please also bear in mind that the removal of components such as the catalytic converter and DPF from the car may be the reason why the vehicle is not allowed to run. In addition, the absence of these components causes significant air pollution. We wrote more on this topic in the article: Are BMW cars a source of smog?
