What is a software update on a BMW?

Modern BMW car models, depending on equipment options, have from a dozen to dozens of controllers connected to each other by CAN networks or fiber optics. Each of the controllers installed in BMW cars has software through which it performs its functions.

The software of the controllers is subject to constant observation and modification by BMW AG and, as with computer software, requires updates from time to time. Operating parameters are improved based on information sent to BMW from ASO stations around the world. Sometimes a software update is recommended, which can improve the operation of a selected component or the entire vehicle. However, the subject of updates must be approached very carefully.

The number of possible programmings in each controller is limited, moreover, in the course of programming, the controller may be permanently damaged, making it necessary to replace it with a new one. It is technically possible to update or change the software in any of the controllers, however, it is recommended to update the software in the entire vehicle at the same time (this applies to all controllers).

What is the CIC navigation update for BMW?

Newer models of BMW cars use navigation using a hard drive and the information stored on it in the form of navigation maps. Updating the navigation involves uploading new maps issued by BMW AG 2 – 3 times a year.

At what time will the software or navigation be updated?

The time required to update the vehicle’s software depends on the model and equipment. The whole procedure is usually a few hours.

Updating the navigation in the CIC takes from 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the type of navigation.

The cost of the upgrade consists of:

• the cost of navigation maps that usually cover the entire area of Europe (or selected other area of the world),
• the cost of the activation key
• the cost of uploading the software.
