Metallic sound from the turbo in BMW – what is the reason and how to fix it?
BMW driver question
For some time now I’ve been hearing a slight metallic sort of clattering sound from around the tur bo (not necessarily the turbine) more on the driver’s side. At the ASO they have not diagnosed any fault however the sound bothers me a bit. The engine is an N47t, mileage around 50k, I was wondering about the timing but I don’t think so. Apparently, some timing components have already been corrected in this engine model.
The problem affected the BMW 525D Xdrive, but it also happens in other models.
Response from BM Cars service
Based on the description provided by you alone, we cannot make an accurate diagnosis.
Diagnosis at the service center is necessary. Your unit (according to the VIN number given to us in the correspondence) is not subject to BMW Technical Action for replacement of timing chains.
In practice, even after 2008, there are still copies in which there is a dangerous stretching of the timing chains initially manifested by noises from around the rear of the engine.
We invite you to take advantage of our service.
