Is it possible to electronically increase the power of a BMW? Modifications and their impact on the operation of the car
BMW driver question
I would like to ask BM Cars as professionals. Is it true that the 116 hp version of the BMW F31 can be electronically upgraded to 150 hp? I have a two-liter engine, but only 116 hp and would like to have more power. If so, how much does it cost?
The question was about the BMW 3 F31, but it also applies to other models.
Answer from BM Cars service
Any modern tuning (power increase) is done electronically by changing the map in the engine controller software or plugging in an additional controller that changes the map. Increasing power is closely related to the consequences to be incurred, which can result in significant costs.
More power means greater requirements for changes in the systems:
- Engine cooling – a different water pump, a different thermostat, a larger radiator.
- Transmission – a different clutch, transmission, shaft and rear axle including half-shafts. For automatic transmission – a different transmission or software.
- Braking – different brake calipers, larger brake discs and pads along with a change in the DSC controller and its software.
- Intake – a different intake manifold, changing the turbocharger and its software.
- Exhaust – a different exhaust manifold, a DPF filter and possibly a catalytic converter.
Taking into account the necessary changes that should be made to the car with the increase in engine power, the cost-effectiveness of any changes and the durability of such a modified vehicle should be carefully analyzed.
