Increase in engine speed after engaging reverse on BMW automatic
BMW driver question
When I put the transmission in reverse, the engine sort of gets a vibration and the revs jump up to about 1100 rpm. It is an automatic transmission. Other than that, it works perfectly. It shifts gears smoothly, there are no jerks. Is this the fault of the transmission? Can this transmission be repaired or remanufactured?
The problem affected a 2016 BMW X1 imported from the US, but it may also occur in other models.
Response from BM Cars service
Unfortunately, from the description of the behavior of the transmission, it is not possible to determine its efficiency or damage. Whenever Drive or reverse gear is engaged in an automatic transmission , the engine speed increases. In the case of reverse gear – the increase is greater. This should not be associated with excessive engine vibration.
On the other hand, just engaging the gear is related to preparing the vehicle for starting. The torque clutch is still slipping, but when you let go of the brake pedal, the vehicle should immediately move off. Hence the need to increase engine speed.
The cost of a possible repair or reconditioning of the transmission is always to be determined only after disassembling it and verifying the degree of wear or damage.
We suggest starting with a thorough diagnosis of the entire vehicle and checking the engine and transmission cushions.
