Louder or different than usual engine sound in BMW – how to fix it?

BMW driver question

On a cold engine after firing up I can hear some louder rattling, after warming up the engine the problem disappears. This happens whenever I start the car after a night out. What could be the cause of this?

The problem affected a 2005 model E91 320d, but it happens in other models as well.

Response from BM Cars service

Loud or “different” than usual rattling noises on a cold engine in the E90-E91 320d can be associated with noises coming from the rubbing of the guide and tensioning rollers of the multi-ribbed belt, or they can come from the timing area – (rear of the engine). Noisy operation of the timing chain – caused by wear or improper operation of the chain tensioner or excessive wear of the chain or timing gears. It is also necessary to check what engine oil was used in your engine. Castrol 5W/30 is recommended.
Sometimes louder engine operation is caused by injectors that are on the verge of wear and their performance starts to deviate significantly from the norm.

Making an accurate diagnosis requires a full diagnostics of the car. We invite you to take advantage of our service.
